The defensive recruiting has lacked compared to the players that Lovie Smith has brought in on offense.

But, that could all change with the addition of TraJon Cotton.

Cotton is down to just 12 teams vying for his commitment and he is already setting up visits.  He has one planned for Illinois when Michigan State comes to town on November 5.

The other visit he has set in stone is when Oregon heads to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers on September 17.

Another visit is currently in the works with Cotton to visit the Oregon Ducks up in Eugene, Oregon.  He wants to either visit them on September 24 or October 8.

Cotton would be a nice west coast steal for the Illini.  He is a wanted player and I think Illinois needs him the most.

Right now, Cotton is rated as a 3-star safety who is ranked as the No. 872 player in the class of 2017 and the No. 75 player in the state of California.

These rankings are a bit skewed, though.  California is a huge state so not all athletes get their time in the sun.

I would love for Lovie to snag Cotton and start building the tough defense we used to see with the Chicago Bears.
