The team that the Purdue Boilermakers put out on the court last season should have been Final 4 bound.  But, that didn’t happen.

Matt Painter takes the No. 7 spot on this list because of the teams he has had and the expectations he has yet to meet.

Painter arguably had the best frontcourt in all of college basketball last season.  They just couldn’t get it done when it mattered, though.

More from Writing Illini

Painter started his career off hot with the Boilermakers.  He made six consecutive NCAA Tournaments but since then things have been rough.

Over the span of the last three seasons, Painter has managed to get back to the postseason twice.  But, I can make an argument that he should have gone deeper into the tournament.

I think Painter is off the hot-seat as of right now but he could jump back on if he has a few bad seasons in the next couple of years.

Painter’s recruiting has been pretty solid in his time with Purdue, though.

In the last three recruiting classes, Purdue has averaged a class ranking of 32nd in the nation.  This is good enough to compete on a national level and that is something Painter has struggled with.

I will be curious if Painter can start winning more in the postseason and if he can, then he will move up on this list.
