Illinois had a few major areas they needed to address for the future and the point guard position was one of them.

They hit the nail on the head when they picked up a commitment from point guard Da’Monte Williams.

More from Writing Illini

Williams is a 4-star recruit that is ranked as the 46th best player in the class of 2017 and the 2nd best player coming out of the state of Illinois.

This was a good pickup for the Illini, but Groce did have a little help in the fact that Williams is a legacy player.  His dad was Frank Williams, an outstanding point guard for Illinois back in the early 2000’s.

I do have to give credit to Groce and the coaching staff, though.  One of the areas Williams liked regarding the coaching staff was the family environment.  He said he enjoyed how it feels like home.

Williams is now attempting to blaze his own trail in Champaign and to step out of his father’s shadow.  He has a chance to do that now and resurrect a struggling program.
