LT Austin Schmidt

Next: LG Gabe Megginson

The Illinois offensive line lost a few good players at guard from last year’s campaign, but one stabilizing force this season is going to be left tackle Austin Schmidt.

More from Writing Illini

Schmidt came out of high school not highly recruited as a 2-star offensive tackle.  He only had one other scholarship offer and that was Central Michigan.

Illinois snagged Schmidt and he has turned out to be a diamond in the rough.

Schmidt’s freshman season he saw a decent amount of action playing in ten games.  He followed his freshman production up with a sophomore season that saw him play in 13 games and start in four.

Schmidt continued his solid Illinois football career last season as he was one of the main offensive linemen to help lead the Illini offense to some great production.

This is the final season for Schmidt and I look for him to be a tremendous help for Vaughn and Lunt to take this team to new heights.  He has one of the most important jobs on the team, which is to protect Lunt’s blind side and keep him on his feet and healthy.
