WR Desmond Cain

Next: LT Austin Schmidt

One of the biggest surprises last season was the emergence of true freshman Desmond Cain.

Cain tore it up on the field and was extremely impressive, especially for being a first timer.

More from Writing Illini

Coming into the Illinois football program Cain was a decently sought after prospect.  He was a 3-star recruit, but according to most recruiting sites he was a cornerback coming out of high school.

Cain quickly transitioned over into the wide receiver role and has blossomed ever since.

In Cain’s freshman campaign he caught 53 passes for 492 yards and one touchdown.  With such a depleted wide receiver core Cain took advantage and really let Illinois see the talent they recruited.

Now Cain comes into his sophomore season as one of the top wide receivers on the team.  I see him played in the slot in a lot of situations and becoming a go to guy over the middle, especially with Dudek being injured.

Cain should be able to rack up some nice stats this season.  He is one of the sure things on the Illinois offense.

I see Cain probably catching just as many passes this season, so around 50-55, but potentially increasing his yardage to around 600 and touchdowns to around 5-7.
