C Joe Spencer

Next: RG Nick Allegretti

Returning at center from last season we have experienced big man Joe Spencer.  Spencer started last season and it is good to have that chemistry with Lunt back again for 2016.

Spencer came into the Illinois football program with a lot of expectations.  He was a 3-star offensive guard coming out of high school.

More from Writing Illini

The recruitment of spencer was tough because there were a decent amount of schools vying for his services.  Illinois ended up snagging him over teams like North Carolina State and Cincinnati.

Spencer was redshirted his freshman season with the Illini but then came back as a redshirt freshman and was thrown into action.  He played in eight games and started two of them that year.

The following campaign Spencer started in 12 out of the 13 games he played in and was one of the main staples for the Illini football team.

Last season Spencer was a main cog at center and a great piece to enable Vaughn to have a great freshman campaign.

Now Spencer is going to need to lead this Illinois football team back to a bowl game.  His leadership on the line is going to be crucial in the success of the offense this season.
