The Illinois football team still has plenty of room left in the class of 2018.

This class needs to be solid for the team to continue building for the future. Getting talented players now will help set the foundation for future success. That is why Carlos Sandy would be a great get for the Illini.

Sandy is a 5-foot-8, 153-pound wide receiver from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 1,427 player in the class of 2018 and the No. 197 player in the state of Florida.

There are a lot of talented kids coming out of Florida so the rating process is a little difficult to sort out. Sandy is possibly underrated in the class of 2018. His size could also have to do with his low rating as well. He is only 5-foot-8 and in today’s game, many coaches are looking for bigger more prototypical wide receivers.

From the tapes, Sandy looks like he could be a great wide receiver for the Illini. He might not have the height the other wide receiver recruits have but he can do everything they can but better.

Sandy is playing a lot on the outside for Cardinal Gibbons but expect him to become a great slot option for Lovie Smith and Garrick McGee. This would be the best option for him moving forward. When Sandy does come into the program, he will have plenty of playing time available as well.

Malik Turner will have graduated and Mike Dudek and Sam Mays will be seniors. Look for Sandy to redshirt year one and then be ready to make an impact in 2019. That is when the Illini would need his skills the most.

Sandy does an amazing job going up and getting the ball at the highest point. He reminds me a lot of Steve Smith Sr. when he pulls off that move. He also reminds me a lot of what Julian Edelman is for the New England Patriots as well. He can play in the slot and with his quickness will be able to catch the ball in space and run for days.

Next: First three games will predict season

Having Sandy take an unofficial visit on June 15 is big for the Illinois program. They need to convince him Champaign is the best place for his future. There are a lot of programs after his services and hopefully, Lovie can get him to commit to the Illini.
