Illinois Basketball: 5 recruits to watch for the Illini class of 2024
Mikey Lewis
There are always players who fly under the radar but start to blossom late in their high school careers. I think Mikey Lewis is one of those talented recruits.
Lewis is a 6-foot-3, 170-pound point guard from Accelerated Schools in Colorado. He is rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 124 player in the class of 2024. He is also the No. 16 point guard in the country and the best player coming out of Colorado.
Lewis’s recruitment had been quiet leading up to the AAU season, but Lewis wowed coaches over the past month. He received quite a few offers in the past month, and one of those offers included Illinois.
So far this season with the Oakland Soldiers AAU team in the Nike EYBL, Lewis has averaged 20.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. He is also shooting 43.2% from the field and an outstanding 41.7% from three-point range.
How I see Illinois using Mikey Lewis
I think there is no question that Lewis would come into the Illinois program and start at the No. 1 guard spot. He would be our starting point guard for as long as he would be in Champaign.
Lewis could be a Damian Lillard-type of player. He has great handles and can distribute a ball like a traditional point guard, but his playmaking elevates his game to another level.
With the shooting ability that Lewis brings to the table, I see him lighting the world on fire and being a one-and-done at Illinois. That lone season would be spectacular, though.
