Illinois Basketball: Top 5 Illini shooting guards of the 2010s
1. Ayo Dosunmu
I know people got upset with me when I put Ayo Dosunmu on the list of top point guards in the 2010s. People thought Trent Frazier should have been there instead. Well, I honestly believe that Ayo fits on that list and in the top five shooting guards in the 2010s.
In fact, I have Ayo taking the No. 1 spot of the top shooting guards this past decade. This kid was amazing on the basketball court for the Illini. He could play multiple roles and form into whatever the team needed him to be.
During his junior year with the Orange and Blue, Ayo put up 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game. His shooting ability is really what sets Ayo apart from the rest. While putting up those 20.1 points, the talented future NBA Draft pick was hitting 39-percent of his three-point shots.
Winning also followed Ayo to Champaign. After a rough first season, Ayo helped lead Illinois to back-to-back postseason berths despite COVID-19 canceling the 2020 NCAA tournament.
The ability to knock down clutch shots, be a leader in the scoring department and winning on the court is why Ayo takes the cake for being the best shooting guard in the 2010s. He can play the No. 1 or No. 2 spot on the court at any given moment. His legacy is sealed as one of the greatest to ever step foot in the State Farm Center.
