Illinois Basketball: Top 5 Illini point guards of the 2010s
1. Demetri McCamey
It was a brief stint in the 2010s, but the No. 1 overall point guard of this decade had to be Demetri McCamey. Arguably the most underrated player in Illinois basketball history, McCamey takes the cake as the best floor general.
McCamey entered the Illinois program with a lot of expectations. The kid was a top 70 player in the 2007 class, so Illini fans were wanting him to be great. Honestly, he didn’t disappoint. From day one, McCamey was sensational for the Illini.
As a freshman, McCamey averaged 8.2 points, 3.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game. He continued to improve as a sophomore averaging 11.5 points, 4.6 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. The best years of McCamey’s career came as a junior and senior. He put up some of the best all-around numbers Illinois fans have seen in years.
Combined in his final two seasons, McCamey averaged 14.8 points, 6.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. Illinois would end up making the NCAA tournament on two different occasions and got to the second round one time.
As far as ball distribution goes, you don’t get much better than McCamey. He could dish it with the best of the best. That is why I am putting him as the No. 1 Illini point guard of the 2010s.
