There aren’t a lot of great recruiting classes for the Illinois football team over the last decade.

Sure, there have been some solid commitments at certain positions. The end of the Ron Zook era wasn’t as good as the beginning when it came to recruiting, but he was still bringing in decent talent. The Tim Beckman era didn’t have great classes but despite him driving the program into the ground, there were some talented players to emerge from his recruiting.

That brings me to Lovie Smith. There are a lot of doubters out there when it comes to Lovie on and off the field. I understand the on the field worries. Illinois doesn’t exactly have a lot of wins right now, but you also have to look at the talent he inherited.

Now Lovie is starting to get his players into Champaign. The program is changing and the talent level is rising at a dramatic pace. He had a good class of 2017 and the class of 2018 is solid as well. But, the class of 2019 is program changing. This class is bringing in a level of quarterback we haven’t seen in Champaign before.

Here are the top 5 QB commits in the last ten classes.
