The Illinois basketball team needs to secure big time recruits from the class of 2017. That isn’t in question.
The big question is who will want to come aboard and help this prestigious, yet struggling, program?
Well, it was announced that guard Paul Scruggs would be coming to visit the Illinois campus next week.
Scruggs is a name that many people have chalked up to commit to the Indiana Hoosiers. But, I am not so sure that is a stone cold lock just yet.
And 2017 Southport G Paul Scruggs said he’ll visit Illinois next week. Another priority #iubb target in-state.

According to 247sports, Scruggs is a 4-star recruit that is ranked as the 31st best player in the class of 2017 and the 4th best player in the state of Indiana.
Just recently, Scruggs cut his list down to just eight teams and Illinois made that list. The fact that he is going to visit Illinois again is great news.
Scruggs was offered a scholarship by Illinois back at the beginning of June of 2015. He then visited the Illini a few weeks later.

Now Scruggs is taking one more visit to the Illini and hopefully, Groce and the coaching staff can make a big enough impact on him. This is an area that Groce needs to work on, closing.
While I think Indiana still has the lead for this talented guard, Illinois still has to be in the running if Scruggs is wanting the Illini on his list and wants to visit them again as well.
I could see Scruggs fitting in nicely with the Illini lineup in 2017. They have Te’Jon Lucas who will start at point guard and Jalen Coleman-Lands who will be the main two-guard.
I think Groce would be willing to play a three-guard lineup like the Illini put out there in 2005 when they went to the National Championship.
This would be a dominating team if you could have a rotation of Da’Monte Williams and Scruggs in that third guard spot.
If Scruggs would commit to Illinois it would help change the program around. But, it is on Groce’s shoulders to sell the Illinois basketball program.
