Illinois Football: Tim Beckman Fired

News was just broken that Illinois football Head Coach Tim Beckman has been fired from the program.

This news was just broken by Bruce Feldman.  Beckman is being replaced by current offensive coordinator Bill Cubit.

In a statement released by Athletic Director Mike Thomas he explained why.

“The preliminary information external reviewers shared with me does not reflect our values or our commitment to the welfare of our student-athletes, and I’ve chosen to act accordingly,” Thomas said in a statement. “During the review, we have asked people not to rush to judgment, but I now have enough information to make this decision in assessing the status and direction of the football program.”

“During a preliminary briefing from the external reviewers, Thomas said he learned of efforts to deter injury reporting and influence medical decisions that pressured players to avoid or postpone medical treatment and continue playing despite injuries. He also said in some instances student-athletes were treated inappropriately with respect to whether they could remain on scholarship during the spring semester of their senior year if they weren’t on the team.”

My first thought on this subject is, wow I am glad the University of Illinois did their due diligence on the matter.  This was a case that has been going on since the beginning of the summer and now the results of the external investigation finally came out.

This is what needed to happen despite the bad timing.  It had to be done and shame on him for doing what he has done.

With that being said…Next-Man-Up

Illinois now replaces Beckman with offensive coordinator Bill Cubit.  Cubit has been running the offense for a few years now and knows the personnel real well.  He is going to be a great head coach.

From a football perspective this is a big hit on the football field and in the recruiting ranks.  Losing a head coach who has been recruiting kids and coaching kids is going to hurt the program for a few years.

With the restart though, maybe this could be a good thing.  We can see what Cubit can do and maybe he is a great coach.  I know the offense was pretty decent last season so maybe they will take a step up.

This is sad, shocking, and all around ugly news.  But I now look at this as a step in the right direction.  In Beckman We Trust is no more.  Now it is In Cubit We Trust.  Go Illini.
