The Illinois football team needs to continue building their program through the next few recruiting classes.

Offering a scholarship to a player is a big deal because that means Lovie Smith and the coaching staff has enough confidence in that player to want them to play on their team. They aren’t just handing these offers out to anyone.

In the last batch of scholarship offers, Lovie and the staff are clearly focusing on three areas. They want to hit the wide receivers hard because they are the players who will get the Illini into the end zone.

Lovie is also focusing on the offensive linemen as well. These are the players that will protect the quarterback so he can throw touchdowns, and block for the running backs so they can keep the ball moving.

I also noticed that the Illini also offered a decent amount of defensive backs. These players will prevent the opposing teams from scoring, which has been the Illini bugaboo over the past decade.

If Lovie could convert some of these recent scholarship offers into commitments, then that would be huge for the future of the Illinois football program.

Here are the most recent scholarships that the Illini have offered.
