The Illinois golf team went into the final round of the Lone Star Invitational with an eight-stroke lead but they couldn’t hold on for the win.

Illinois didn’t play badly on day three. They finished the day with a score of -9 in the final round for an overall score of -36 for the tournament. Normally, this would be good enough to win but No. 15 Oklahoma shot a day three score of -21.

This amazing Sooner score was led by Max McGreevy who was -8 on the day and that included a front nine score of 30. The Illini couldn’t quite finish this tournament off but there isn’t much you can do when a team shoots a one day total of -21.

Illinois still played well overall, though. They needed a good finish in this tournament because as of late they haven’t put up the best scores. The squad finished fourth and eight in the last two tournaments so seeing them play well is a good sign.

Dylan Meyer led the Illini in San Antonio, Texas with an overall score of -14, which was good enough for a tie for second place. He had a final round score of -5 and it is good to see him playing well again. He hasn’t had a good run as of late.

Michael Feagles and Nick Hardy both were solid in this tournament as well. Feagles finished in a tie for fourth place with an overall score of -10. Hardy wasn’t too far behind with an overall score of -7 and that was good enough to finish in a tie for sixth place.

The No. 4 golfer for the Illini was Edoardo Lipparelli who shot an overall score of -4, which was good enough to finish in a tie for 15th place. He also had a solid final day shooting -2.

Bryan Baumgarten was the final golfer for the Illini five and he shot an overall score of +13. It wasn’t a good tournament for him but the other four picked up the slack, just like a team should do.

Illinois also sent Giovanni Tadiotto to the tournament as an independent. He finished +1 overall and a tie for 41st place.

Next: Illini showing heart is greatly appreciated

The Illini didn’t win the Lone Star Invitational but they were clearly better than the past few outings. Their next tournament is the 3M Augusta Invitational and hopefully, they can build on the momentum.
