The Illinois football team is building not just a good recruiting class for 2017, but potentially a great one.

They currently have 17 players committed to play for the Illini next season and four of those players will actually enroll early so they can participate in Spring Practice.

Among the 17 commitments for Lovie Smith and the Illini, there are three wide receivers in that bunch.

These wide receivers are going to help build the Illinois offense into a powerhouse that we haven’t seen since, potentially, the Kurt Kittner era.

The current wide receiver commitments are Carmoni Green, who enrolled early, Ricky Smalling, who is a four-star prospect, and Kendall Smith.

These three make up a pretty solid wide receiver class as it is, but the Illini aren’t done with just these three, though.

Lovie has the potential to wrangle in a few more top pass catchers.  Players like four-star Jeff Thomas are coming closer to a decision.

Another wide receiver that cut his list down last night is Reggie Roberson.

Roberson was once committed to the Kansas Jayhawks but in mid-November he decided to back away from that commitment and look at all the options.

More from Writing Illini

This was a smart decision for Roberson, no matter where he ends up committing.  He ended up receiving more scholarships from big-time programs after his decommitment.

Roberson is ranked as a three-star wide receiver who is the No. 136 ranked pass catcher in the class of 2017 and a highly sought after recruit.

Last night, Roberson decided to cut his list down to just six programs he will be choosing from.  Those six teams are Kansas, Utah, West Virginia, Washington State, Oregon State, and Illinois.

This is a solid list of high-powered offenses.  But, Illinois knows how much Roberson would mean to the offense in Champaign and they also showed that last night with some press coverage on the recruit.

Offensive coordinator Garrick McGee decided to stop by the Roberson household and paid Reggie a visit.  This was a great decision considering everyone knew he was coming out with his top five list.

Roberson is also really good friends with Illini commit Smalling, as well.  They visited Champaign together and Smalling has done an in-home visit to Roberson’s house too.

The recipe for Roberson to commit is all there.  Illinois has great potential to land this talented wide receiver and build the best wide receiver class we have seen in a long time.
