Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is…THE ONE…THE ONLY…#12 quarterback Wes Lunt! Lunt is entering his sophomore season and his first actual season with the Fighting Illini.

Lunt transferred to Illinois from Oklahoma State before the 2013 season (sat out season per NCAA transfer rules).

In his only season at Oklahoma State, he got bit by the injury bug, but still threw for 1,108 yards, six touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

This offseason, the Illinois Fighting Illini are in the midst of a little quarterback battle.

Many Illini fans are waiting to see who among Lunt, Aaron Bailey, and Reilly O’Toole will be named the Illini starting quarterback for the 2014 season.

The main positive going for Lunt in this QB battle is that he is the “ideal guy” for Bill Cubit’s offensive system. He’s a pocket passer who can take the ball deep and stretch the field (just like what Cubit loves to do).

Yes, it’s true that Wes Lunt did not have the best of spring games for the Fighting Illini back in April. However, he has looked much better for the team thus far in training camp. He’s looked like the man that will be the Illini starting OB this upcoming season.

Writing Illini’s own Ryan Kraemer was at Camp Rantoul last week, and he thinks that Lunt may already have the quarterback battle all wrapped up.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
