With the season less than three weeks away, the Illinois volleyball team was ranked eleventh overall in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll on Monday.
Illinois is looking to improve from their successful 2013 campaign where they went 18-15 and reached their fifth NCAA Regional in the past six season.
Along with Illinois, six other Big Ten teams made the AVCA Preseason Top 25. Defending champ Penn State sits at the top of the poll in front of Wisconsin (6th), Nebraska (7th), Purdue (8th), Minnesota (12th), and Michigan State (16th).
Nine of the Illini’s 24 regular season foes are ranked in the Preseason Top 25.
In non-conference play, the team will face Stanford (3rd, seven 1st-place votes), North Carolina (20th), and Creighton (23rd). On top of those three non-conference foes, Colorado, Long Beach State, and UCLA also received votes in the poll.
Illinois will open their regular season on August 28th against Long Beach State in the Illini Classic. After closing the Illini Classic with matches with SIU and UNC, the Illini will head to California for matches against UCLA and Stanford in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge.
