Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series! In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.
Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #21 Zane Petty. Petty is entering his senior season and second year as a member of the Fighting Illini.
After coming to Illinois as a JUCO recruit last offseason, Zane Petty played in all twelve games and started the final seven games in 2013.
He ranked fourth on the Fighting Illini in tackles with 75 total. His career high in tackles came against the Ohio State Buckeyes last year (15 tackles).
As a unit, this season is going to be a big year for the Illinois defense.
The 2013 season was not a very positive year for the Orange & Blue on defense, and fans are hoping that the defensive unit shows some kind of an improvement this time around.
Although he only started seven games for the Orange & Blue last season, Zane Petty is hoping to be the starting free safety for the team in 2014.
The Illinois secondary is full of young players. Because of this, hopefully, Petty could serve as one of the leaders on this year’s Illinois defense while being the main guy at FS this season.
Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
