Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #32 defensive back Chris James. James will be entering his first season with the Fighting Illini, as he was one of the team’s signees from the 2014 recruiting class.

He was a two-star recruit coming out of West Orange-Stark High School in Orange, Texas.

James was a very late addition to the Illinois Fighting Illini as he committed to the team just days before the 2014 National Signing Day.

Derek Piper of Illini 247 described James as “extremely athletic, has good speed and he is a very solid tackler.”

His only knock against him was him being a bit undersized at 5’10”.

For the Illini team as a whole, this season is going to be a big year for the defense.

The 2013 season was not a positive year for the Orange & Blue on defense, and fans are hoping that the defensive unit shows some kind of an improvement this time around.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
