Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #34 linebacker Mike Svetina. Svetina is entering his junior season as a member of the Fighting Illini.

Since coming to Champaign in 2012, Mike Svetina  has played in every single Illinois game.

In his two seasons with the Illini, the Brunswick, Ohio native has recorded 97 total tackles (42 solo/55 assisted), 4.5 tackles-for-loss, one forced fumble, and one pass deflection.

However, this season is going to be a big year for the Illinois defense.

The 2013 season was not a very positive year for the Orange & Blue on defense, and fans are hoping that the defensive unit shows some kind of an improvement this time around.

It will be interesting to see how Tim Beckman chooses to use Svetina in 2014. There’s no doubt that he will play in all twelve games (barring injuries) this season, but will he be a starter at the weak-side linebacker position?

Right now, ourlads.com has Svetina listed as the second string WLB behind sophomore T.J. Neal, who was listed as a defensive end last season.

However, Svetina was used at the STAR (safety/linebacker) position in 2014. He could be used at that position again, but most fans are predicting Earnest Thomas III to be the STAR starter for Illinois this season.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
