Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is a pair of #38’s in kicker David Reisner and defensive back Samuel Harlib. Both Reisner and Harlib joined Illinois as walk-ons during the spring/summer of 2013.

Harlib played his high school ball at the Army & Navy Academy in California while Reisner played his high school ball at South Elgin High School in Illinois.

Harlib played both football and basketball while running track at the Army & Navy Academy. He redshirted for the Fighting Illini last season and will be a redshirt freshman in 2014.

Reisner was a top 20 overall recruit by ESPN and was a two-time All-Conference and All-Area kicker (2010 and 2011) in high school. The Illinois native will be a sophomore this season for the Orange & Blue.

For Reisner, it would be a surprise to see him kicking field goals and extra points for Illinois because the team returns their starter from last season in Taylor Zalewski.

Right now, ourlads.com has David Reisner as the third kicker on the depth chart behind the junior Zalewski and sophomore Ryan Frain.

As for Harlib, ourlads.com has him listed as the fourth SS on the depth chart entering the 2014 season.

This season is going to be a big year for the Illinois defense.

That’s because the defense did not look too good (putting it nicely) in 2013, and Illini Nation is hoping that the defensive unit shows some kind of an improvement this time around.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
