Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #44 Austin Teitsma. Teitsma is entering his senior season as a member of the Fighting Illini.

He redshirted his first year at Illinois in 2010 and played his first season in 2011.

Since Tim Beckman has been the head coach in Champaign, Teitsma has played in all twelve of Illinois’ games each of the past two seasons.

Last season, he was sixth on the team with 53 total tackles (16 solo/37 assisted). He also recorded 5.5 tackles-for-loss, half a sack, and one forced fumble.

This season is going to be a big year for the Illinois defense.

The 2013 season was not a very positive year for the Orange & Blue on defense, and fans are hoping that the defensive unit shows some kind of an improvement this time around.

For Teitsma, it would be a surprise to not see him starting for the Fighting Illini at the defensive tackle position in 2014.

Right now, ourlads.com projects Teitsma and Jihad Ward to start at defensive tackle this season.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
