Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #53 offensive lineman Nick Allegretti. Allegretti joined the Fighting Illini this past offseason as one of Illinois’ 17 enrollees from the 2014 recruiting class.

Allegretti was a three-star recruit coming out of Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort, Illinois.

He was one of the Top 25 recruits from the state of Illinois and participated in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Last season, the Illinois’ offensive line helped the offense to 5,120 total yards in Bill Cubit’s first year as offensive coordinator.

Of those 5,120 yards, the Fighting Illini threw for 3,452 yards and ran for 1,668 yards. The Illini also were able to score 43 touchdowns (23 passing and 20 rushing) in 2013.

Illini Nation shouldn’t expect to see Nick Allegretti as a starter for Bill Cubit’s offense in 2014.

This is because the Fighting Illini are returning four of their five starters from their 2013 offensive line.

Even with one open spot on the O-Line this offseason, it would be a surprise to see Allegretti as a starter for the Orange & Blue this season.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
