Austin Schmidt Days Until Illinois Fighting Illini Season Opener

Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #57 offensive lineman Austin Schmidt. Schmidt is entering his second season as a member of the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Schmidt played his high school football at Olentangy High School in Ohio.

Last season, the Illinois’ offensive line helped the offense to 5,120 total yards in Bill Cubit’s first year as offensive coordinator.

Of those 5,120 yards, the Fighting Illini threw for 3,452 yards and ran for 1,668 yards. The Illini also were able to score 43 touchdowns (23 passing and 20 rushing) in 2013.

Illinois currently has an open slot at the right tackle position because the team lost 6-year senior Corey Lewis this offseason. There’s a good chance that Schmidt starts at RT for the Illini in 2014.

Many are projecting Schmidt to be Illinois’ right tackle when the team squares off against Youngstown State on August 30th.

The projected starting offensive line includes: Austin Schmidt, Simon Cvijanovic, Ted Karras, Alex, Hill, and Michael Heitz

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
