Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #60 offensive lineman Tony Durkin. Durkin is entering his junior season as a member of the Fighting Illini.

Durkin played his high school football at Andrew High School in Tinley Park, Illinois.

Last season, the Illinois’ offensive line helped the offense to 5,120 total yards in Bill Cubit’s first year as offensive coordinator.

Of those 5,120 yards, the Fighting Illini threw for 3,452 yards and ran for 1,668 yards. The Illini also were able to score 43 touchdowns (23 passing and 20 rushing) in 2013.

Just like I’ve said in so many offensive lineman previews this offseason, there’s a slim chance that Durkin helps out the Fighting Illini offense in 2014.

Illinois has an open slot because they lost 6-year senior Corey Lewis this offseason. However, the chances do not look good for Durkin to replace Lewis on the Illini O-Line.

That’s because the likely starting five for Illinois’ offensive line will be Simon Cvijanovic, Alex Hill, Ted Karras, Michael Heitz, and Austin Schmidt (or Scott McDowell).

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
