Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #66 offensive lineman Scott McDowell. The Illini lineman is entering his junior season as a member of the Orange & Blue.

After redshirting in 2011, McDowell played in just one game during Tim Beckman’s first year as head coach at Illinois. His debut came when the Illini beat Charleston Southern, 44-0, in the team’s third game of the season. He played at the center position to help out for the injured Graham Pocic and recorded 19 snaps.

However, McDowell did not play a single game in 2013.

Last season, the Illinois’ offensive line helped the offense to 5,120 total yards in Bill Cubit’s first year as offensive coordinator.

Of those 5,120 yards, the Fighting Illini threw for 3,452 yards and ran for 1,668 yards. The Illini also were able to score 43 touchdowns (23 passing and 20 rushing) in 2013.

It would be surprising to see Scott McDowell start for the Illinois on offense this season.

Although the Illini will have one open spot on the offensive line, McDowell is not a front runner for the job.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
