Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #84 wide receiver Kenny Knight. Knight joined the Fighting Illini as a three-star wide receiver in 2011 (Ron Zook recruit).

Knight redshirted his first year at Illinois in 2011 and played his first season in 2012. He competed in a total of four games in his first season and originally wore the number 19.

During his freshman season, he caught five passes for 52 yards, averaging 10.4 yards per reception. His best game came against Penn State where he caught a season-high three passes for 30 yards.

Despite not racking up any receptions during his second season wearing the Orange & Blue, Kenny Knight could have the opportunity to get a foot in the door of Bill Cubit’s offensive system in his junior season.

Illinois saw a ton of talent leave the wide receiver this past offseason. However, Bill Cubit has some quality options to use at the wide receiver position.

It’s clear that Geronimo Allison and Martize Barr will be #1 and #2 in the Illini wide receiver corp. Illinois also returns receivers Justin Hardee and Dionte Taylor. Barr, Hardee, and Taylor all have receptions in 2013.

There will be a few “holes” to fill for the Illini at the wide receiver position coming into this upcoming season. Illini fans should expect Kenny Knight to fight for more receptions, but he will be competing with guys like Mike Dudek, Zach Grant, Jeremy Whitlow, and and Marchie Murdock.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
