Welcome to our Countdown to Kickoff series!  In this series, we’ll do roster previews as we count down the days until the Illinois Fighting Illini August 30th season opener against Youngstown State.

Next up in the Countdown to Kickoff series is #87 tight end/defensive end Tyler White. White joined the Fighting Illini last offseason as he was Beckman’s 19th commit from the 2013 recruiting class.

In high school, White played at the tight end, defensive end, and running back positions. In his senior season at Plainwell in Michigan, he caught 19 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

White saw the field in all twelve of the Illini’s games during his freshman season, but only recorded stats in just three of them. He recorded three total tackles (all assisted) in 2013.

Despite not racking up any receptions during his first season wearing the Orange & Blue, Tyler White could have the opportunity to get a foot in the door of Bill Cubit’s offensive system in his sophomore season.

The Fighting Illini had one of their four top tight ends leave the team this offseason due to the NFL Draft (Evan Wilson). On top of that, Illinois also lost some quality talent at wide receiver due to the draft and graduation.

However, Bill Cubit saw some talented offensive recruits come in to Champaign this offseason.

There’s no doubt that Tyler White has a chance to make some type of an impact on the offensive side of the ball, but fans shouldn’t be surprised if his role in 2014 is similar to his role from 2013.

Be on the lookout for our Countdown to Kickoff series as we continue to work our way to the season opener on August 30th.
