Current Illini Brian Campbell and former Illini Luke Guthrie both qualified for the 2014 U.S. Open on Monday by each tying for fourth in their respective sectional qualifiers.
Brian Campbell is coming off of a very hard fought match-up against Stanford in the NCAA Championship and will be competing in his first ever U.S. Open.
Campbell put up a 6-under on the day. He shot a 4-under on the Ocean Course in the morning on Monday while shooting a 2-under at Lake Merced in the afternoon.
For Guthrie, it will be his second-straight U.S. Open appearance. He posted a 4-under on the day at the Columbus qualifier by shooting consecutive 2-under rounds at Scioto Country Club and a third 2-under at Brookline Golf & Country Club.
The only Illini not to officially qualify for the U.S. Open on Monday was former Illini Scott Langley. However, he is the first alternate from the Memphis qualifier after losing a five player playoff for the final two spots.
Per fightingillini.com, this gives Langley “a good chance to make the field.”
The 2014 U.S. Open will be held at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurstin in North Carolina from June 12th to 15th.
