On Monday, it was announced that the Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball team will face off against the Villanova Wildcats in the 2014 Jimmy V Men’s Classic.
The Illini and the Wildcats will play in the first game of a doubleheader at 7 p.m. ET from Madison Square Garden in New York City. The game will be televised on ESPN.
The Jimmy V match-up will be the first meeting between Illinois and Villanova since 1988. Nova defeated the Illini 66-63 in the 1988 NCAA Championship quarterfinals.
It will also be the seventh meeting between the two teams all-time (series tied 3-3).
Villanova will play in its third Jimmy V Classic and their first Jimmy V Classic game since 2011. They played Texas in 2008 and Missouri in 2011.
For Illinois, it will be their second appearance in the Jimmy V Men’s Classic.
In their only Jimmy V Men’s Classic game, the Illini lost to Providence, 70-51, in 2003.
This will be the eighth annual Jimmy V Men’s Classic and will end Jimmy V Week. Since it’s first year, Jimmy V Week has generated $8,246,000 in total contributions for The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
Per jimmyv.org, “The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator… It awards 100 percent of all direct cash donations to cancer research and related programs.”
