Over the weekend, the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee announced its declarations for the NCAA Preliminary Track and Field Championships.
The Illinois Fighting Illini earned a total of 20 entries in the NCAA Preliminary Track and Field Championships and will compete in the west region.
Out of the 20 entries, the Illini will send 17 individual athletes to the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Illinois’ two-time Big Ten champ Vanier Joseph was able to earn the highest seed among Illinois athletes.
Joseph earned the #3 seed and will look to remain undefeated in the 110m hurdles this year.
Some other Illini to earn Top 10 seeds in the west region are: Joe McAsey (#5 in the 800m), Stephon Pamilton (#9 in the 400m), DJ Zahn (#10 in the 400m), and Cam Viney (#6 in the 400m).
The Illinois Fighting Illini also will have five athletes compete in the field events in the west region. These field athletes include: Brandon Noe (discus), Branden Tanthavong (triple jump), Cody Klein (pole vault), Davis Fraker (hammer throw), and Ben Dodds (javelin).
The NCAA West Preliminary Round will take place in Fayetteville, Arkansas on May 29th-31th.
The Top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon on June 11th-14th.
