After a Memorial Day weekend that featured some increment weather, the Illinois Fighting Illini were able to qualify for match-play at the NCAA Championships on Monday.
Entering the Third Round in tenth place, the Fighting Illini were able to make a move up the standings. They shot a 280 (E) for the second straight day and moved up two spots to eighth on the team leader board.
Overall, Illinois has shot 845 at the NCAA Championships which puts them at 5-over-par.
The Illini also received a huge performance from their Big Ten Player of the Year during Third Round play. Junior Brian Campbell led all Illini golfers by shooting 7-under-par on Monday. His Third Round performance was good enough to move him from 75th to 9th on the player leader boards.
According to purduesports.com, “the top eight teams from the 54-hole stroke play rounds will then compete in a match-play format on Tuesday and Wednesday to determine the 2014 NCAA National Champion.”
The eight teams to make the cut for match-play are: Stanford, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, UCLA, SMU, and Illinois.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Tuesday which the championship taking place on Wednesday.
