The one offensive position for the Illinois Fighting Illini that took a big hit this offseason was wide receiver.

Illinois saw four of their Top 5 in receiving yards graduate over the offseason (Steve Hull, Spencer Harris, Miles Osei, and Ryan Lankford).

Because of this, we continue our 2014 Illinois Fighting Illini football player previews with the man will be the #1 receiving target for the Illini in 2014. That man, of course, is senior wide receiver Martize Barr.

Fast Facts:

  • Position: Wide Receiver
  • Hometown: Washington, D.C.
  • High School: Coolidge
  • Measurements: 6-foot-0, 195 lb.
  • Age at 2014 season opener: 21
  • Games played: 32 (Illinois/Iowa Western/New Mexico)
  • Cumulative stats: 65 receptions, 823 receiving yards, six touchdowns (all three schools)

2013 Season:

  • Games played: 11
  • Cumulative stats: 26 receptions, 246 receiving yards, 1 touchdown, 7 kick returns, 142 kick return yards

Last season, Martize Barr had a positive beginning to his first year with the Fighting Illini.

In just two games, the newly transferred wide receiver caught nine passes for 108 yards and one touchdown. However, since those games, Barr hauled in 4+ receptions just twice.

That’s because the lion’s share of the targets were going to senior wide receivers Hull, Harris, and Osei late in the season. The Illini also used running back Josh Ferguson in the pass game a lot as well.

However, 2014 is a different story.

Barr will be the lone senior wide out for the Illini this season and should get most of the targets because of it.

Tim Beckman added some JUCO receivers in the 2014 recruiting class to help out, but there’s no question that Martize Barr will need to be “the man” for the Illini this season.

No matter who they start at quarterback…
