On Wednesday, John Groce and company extended an offer to 2016 point guard Jamal Murray. Murray is the 7th best point guard from the Class of 2016.
Although he is a 2016 recruit, Murray has been on the radar of several basketball programs from across the nation. However, he had yet to receive an offer until Illinois stepped in and became the first to do so.
Per 247Sports, Jamal Murray is heavily interested in the Syracuse Orange. His interest in Syracuse is so high that all of the recruiting experts, including Illini247’s Derek Piper, on the 247Sports Crystal Ball are predicting him to give his verbal commitment to the Orange.
At this point, John Groce has one open scholarship that he can offer to a recruit from the Class of 2016.
It will be interesting to see what Coach Groce will do with his lone scholarship for the 2016 recruiting class. The four leading recruits for the scholarship are Jamal Murray, Jermaine Haley, Jayson Tatum, and Nick Rakocevic.
Of course, it will all depend on who from the 2015 recruiting class decides to commit to the Orange & Blue. With two scholarships for the Class of 2015, Groce is hoping to land two recruits from their three big targets (Carlton Bragg, Elijah Thomas, and Jalen Brunson).
However, if Brunson decides not to commit to Illinois, Illini Nation can expect John Groce to go hard at Jamal Murray for his verbal commitment.
The four-star recruit is currently ranked 7th among point guards and 30th among 2016 high school recruits by 247Sports.
