On Saturday, John Groce and company extended an offer to 2016 point guard Jermaine Haley.
Although he is a 2016 recruit, Haley has been on the radar of several basketball programs from across the nation as he currently holds offers from 13 teams.
These teams include: Illinois, Boise State, Louisville, New Mexico State, Oregon State, Portland, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Seattle, UC Irvine, Utah, Utah State, and Wyoming.
At this point in time, John Groce and the Illinois Fighting Illini do not have a single commitment from the 2016 recruiting class.
Groce has three open scholarships for the 2016-17 season, but only one will go to a 2016 recruit because two of those three open scholarships will go to 2015 recruits or transfers (two open spots for the 2015-16 season).
So, barring anyone leaving early or getting suspended, Coach Groce has only one scholarship to deal out to a 2016 recruit.
There’s no doubt that the top target for Groce from the 2016 class is point guard Jamal Murray, but he is heavily interested in Syracuse at this time.
Outside of Murray, the top three “realistic” targets for Illinois’ lone scholarship for the 2016-17 season are shooting guard Jayson Tatum, point guard Jermaine Haley, and power forward Nick Rakocevic.
Who will get the scholarship? It will depend on what position Coach Groce will be looking for after the 2015-16 season.
