On Thursday, the NFCA member coaches from the Midwest region elected players for the NFCA All-Midwest Region teams.
The Illinois Fighting Illini saw two of their players make the list as sophomores Allie Bauch and Kylie Johnson were elected to the NFCA All-Midwest Region Third Team.
Bauch and Johnson became the 15th and 16th Illini players to earn All-Region honors over the past 15 seasons. Bauch is the second Illini second baseman to earn this honor while Johnson is the third Illini outfielder. This is also Johnson’s 2nd postseason award as she was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team earlier this month.
Allie Bauch was the leadoff hitter for the Fighting Illini and started all 50 games at second base in 2014. While leading the team with a .547 slugging percentage and eight homers, she led the Big Ten in assists and set a new Illinois record for double plays by a second baseman (16).
Johnson started just 37 games for the Fighting Illini in 2014, but played in 45 games. She played both right field and designated player and led the team with a .383 batting average (eighth all-time). She also led the Big Ten with three triples during conference play and ten stolen bases.
Per fightingillini.com, head coach Terri Sullivan had this to say about Bauch and Johnson’s postseason awards:
“Kylie and Allie really improved their games on all levels this year. This improvement was a direct result of the dedication they gave to softball in the offseason and in their efforts every day at practice. They are outstanding teammates, and we know they will become even better players as upperclassmen and become outstanding leaders for our team. I know they would say their teammates made them better as well.”
392 Division I student-athletes were named to all the All-Region squads. The Big Ten saw 36 of its players get named to one of the squads on Thursday.
