Illinois Fighting Illini Softball: Illini's Season Comes to an End Against Michigan

The Illinois Fighting Illini weren’t able to keep their season alive in their quarterfinals match-up of the Big Ten Tournament.

After shutting out Iowa in the First Round, Illinois lost to #10 Michigan, 8-2, on Friday.

The Wolverines opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second when Lindsay Montemarano homered off of Illini freshman Brandi Needham. The Illini got one run back though in the third off a Brittany Sanchez sacrifice fly.

However, Michigan opened the game up in the fifth and sixth innings. They scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth off of a Caitlin Blanchard grand slam and scored two more in the sixth.

Illinois was able to add one run in the seventh, but was able to come back to win the game.

Illinois pitcher Brandi Needham ended her freshman season with a 17-15 record and allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and two walks with two strikeouts against Michigan.

Per, head coach Terri Sullivan had this to say following the loss to Michigan:

“We lost to a great team today, one that has so many weapons. We did some good things, but not enough to win it.”
