On Friday afternoon in Iowa City, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes, 4-1, in game one of their three game series.
Iowa jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first, but that would be the only run the Hawkeyes would score on Illinois pitching duo Drasen Johnson and Tyler Jay.
Johnson started the game for the Illini. He pitched 6.1 innings and gave up just one run on seven hits while striking out seven Hawkeyes. Jay came in for the last 2.2 innings and was perfect with five strikeouts.
Illinois tied the game at one in the fifth and took the lead in the sixth. They added one more insurance run in the ninth in route to the 4-1 win.
Per fightingillini.com, head coach Dan Hartleb had this to say following his team’s win:
“It was an opportunistic game for us, as we took advantage with two outs in crucial situations. I feel fortunate to come away with the win because I didn’t think we played very well. We made numerous errors and didn’t have great pitch selection, but the bottom line is we found a way to win.”
The Fighting Illini will play game two of their three game series against the Hawkeyes on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. (CST).
