The Illinois Fighting Illini were able to keep their season alive on Thursday as the team defeated Iowa, 6-0, in the first round of the Big ten Tournament.
Both teams went scoreless until the Illini completely tore things open in the top of the seventh.
Nicole Evans opened things up in the seventh with a lead off homer, and the runs kept coming for the Orange & Blue. Remeny Perez even cracked a three run home run in Illinois’ 6 run outburst.
The Fighting Illini had six batters with multi-hits in the game. These Illini included: Allie Bauch, Alex Booker, Nicole Evans, Brittany Sanchez, Jess Perkins, Kylie Johnson, and Remeny Perez.
Illinois also received a great performance on the mound from star freshman right hander Brandi Needham.
Needham pitched a complete seven innings and shut the Hawkeyes out. She struck out two batters and only gave up five hits.
Per fightingillini.com, head coach Terri Sullivan had this to say following the 6-0 victory:
“The first game of a conference tournament can always be interesting and defense is so key in those games. We had to have strong defense for seven innings, and we were getting runners on but just not pushing them across.”
The Fighting Illini will play the Michigan Wolverines today at 4:30 p.m. (CST) in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
