On Wednesday, head coach Janet Rayfield announced the Illinois Fighting Illini’s schedule for the 2014 season.
Illinois will be faced with a very tough 2014 campaign that includes: 10 teams who made it to last year’s NCAA Tournament, three teams that finished last season within the NCAA Top-25, and road games against new Big Ten members Maryland and Rutgers.
According to fightingillini.com, Rayfield had this to say about the Illini’s 2014 schedule:
“The 2014 schedule is challenging and exciting for both our team and our fans. The level of competition and amount of travel as we compete in a full 13-game conference schedule will be a test for our discipline and our consistency.”
The Fighting Illini will open the season against Norte Dame, Louisville, and Arizona State. They went 1-3 against these three teams a season ago.
Then, after playing two game in the College of Charleston Tournament, Illinois will begin their 13-game Big Ten conference slate for the 2014 season. The toughest part of this conference schedule will be between Sept. 26th and Oct. 19th where the Illini will play five of six matches on the road.
When asked about Illinois’ Big Ten road games, Rayfield said:
“Our Big Ten road schedule of Iowa, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland and Rutgers certainly has us traveling to the corners of the conference geographically. That will be another challenge for our team to embrace.”
This season’s Big Ten Tournament will be from Nov. 5-9 in West Lafayette, Indiana (Purdue). The 2014 NCAA Tournament will begin on Nov. 14.
