The Illinois Fighting Illini were able to complete the sweep of the Penn State Nittany Lions to end the regular season on a high note.
On Sunday morning at University Park, the Illini defeated Penn State, 6-1. With the win, they improved to 23-25 overall and 7-16 in the Big Ten.
After a scoreless first to start the game, Illinois shortstop Ruby Rivera started the second inning off with a bang by homering to center field. The Illini were able to pick up another run after Alyssa Gunther scored on a Remeny Perez ground out to second.
Both the Illini and the Nittany Lions would score a run apiece in the sixth inning before Illinois blew the game wide open in the seventh.
The Orange & Blue scored three runs in the seventh on an Allie Bauch three-run home run to right center.
Illinois also received a great performance on the mound from freshman right hander Brandi Needham.
Needham pitched a complete seventh innings on Sunday and only allowed three Nittany Lions to reach base. Her only blunder of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when she gave up a solo homer to Kasie Hatfield.
The Fighting Illini will play next on May 8th in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. Illinois earned the 9th seed in the tournament and will play the 8th seeded Iowa Hawkeyes on May 8th at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
