The Illinois Fighting Illini were able to complete the sweep of the Michigan State Spartans in their final regular season game at Illinois Field.
On Sunday afternoon, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Michigan State Spartans, 10-9, in walk-off fashion…again! With the win, the Fighting Illini have improved to 27-17 overall and 13-5 in the Big Ten.
The hero of the game for the second straight game of the series was none other than right fielder Casey Fletcher.
After Illinois pulled within one run of the Spartans in the bottom of the ninth, Fletcher came up to bat with two on and two out. Just like on Saturday, Fletcher ripped a single to left to give the Illini the 10-9 walk-off victory.
The walk-off hit was only Fletcher’s second hit of the entire game as he finished 2-for-5 with two strikeouts on the day. However, he was still able to give Illinois the victory and the sweep of the Spartans.
After the game, head coach Dan Hartleb said:
“I hope it’s Casey Fletcher month. That means we’ve got three more good weeks out of him. For him to be in those positions, there are other guys that are involved. He’s been the guys who’s come up in crucial situations and come up with big hits for us.”
On the mound, sophomore southpaw Kevin Duchene started the game for the Orange & Blue, but only lasted three innings.
In his three innings of work, he gave up one run on four hits and faced a total of eleven Spartan batters.
The Fighting Illini will start up a three-game series with the Iowa Hawkeyes on May 9th in Iowa City.
