On Saturday afternoon at University Park, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions, 6-1. With the win, the Fighting Illini have improved to 22-25 overall and 6-16 in the Big Ten.
The Illini offense came out strong right from the word go. In the first inning, second baseman Allie Bauch hit a solo home run and Kylie Johnson scored on a Brittany Sanchez ground out to second to give the Orange & Blue a 2-0 lead.
Illinois would add two more runs in the fourth and sixth innings as well.
The big offensive leaders for the Illini on Saturday were Allie Bauch and Kylie Johnson. Both went 2-for-4 at the dish with two runs and two RBIs.
The Fighting Illini also received a huge game on the mound from right hander Sheiese Arnold. Arnold was able to give up only one run on six hits while pitching a complete seven innings. With the win, Arnold increased her personal record to 6-10 on the season.
After the game, Arnold said:
“I just trusted Jenna and my teammates around me saying, `I’ve got your back, I’ve got your back.’ That’s what really helped. I trusted my pitches, knowing my teammates had my back.”
The Fighting Illini will look to complete their sweep of the Nittany Lions to end the regular season tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (CST).
