On Saturday afternoon at Illinois Field, the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Michigan State Spartans, 5-4, in walk-off fashion. With the win, the Fighting Illini have improved to 26-17 overall and 12-5 in the Big Ten.
Illinois jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after Will Krug scored on a David Kerian ground out in the first inning and a Casey Fletcher homer in the second inning. However, that lead did not hold for the Orange & Blue.
After Michigan State took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth, the Fighting Illini were able to tie the game on a Jason Goldstein homer to open their half of the sixth inning.
The Illini and the Spartans would remained tied at four until the tenth inning. It was then that Illinois right fielder Casey Fletcher hit a bases loaded walk-off single down the left field line to win the game.
This week has been one to remember for Fletcher. The Illini outfielder hit two home runs on Saturday with made five total for the week after he knocked three out of the park on Wednesday.
After the game, Fletcher said:
“I’ve never had a walk-off hit like that, so it feels very rewarding. It’s been a good week. I don’t know what else to say. We’ve got to come out tomorrow and hopefully complete the sweep.”
The Fighting Illini will play the finale of their three game series against the Spartans tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. (CST).
