On what seemed to be a busy Wednesday for Illinois recruiting, head coach John Groce and assisstant coach Jamall Walker traveled to Dallas, Texas in order to visit with 2015 point guard Jawun Evans. Evans is the second Top 10 Texas recruit that Coach Groce is heavily targeting for the 2015 recruiting class (Elijah Thomas is the other).
Evans has received a total of ten offers, but only seems to be interested in Illinois, Oklahoma State, SMU, and Baylor (has not offered).
Currently, the majority of the recruiting experts on the 247Sports Crystal Ball favor Evans staying in the state of Texas and picking SMU. However, there are some experts predicting that Oklahoma State will be the team to land the 8th best Texas recruit.
At this point in time, I would put Jawun Evans as more of a priority for than Elijah Thomas for Coach Groce and company. This is because the Fighting Illini only have three point guards on their current roster in senior Ahmad Starks, senior Tracy Abrams, and sophomore Jaylon Tate.
Right now, that’s it, and there seems to be no more point guards coming in via recruiting.
If Groce could lock up Evans, that would at least give the team two PGs heading into the 2015-16 season. Also, based on Tate’s play in his freshman season, Evans might be able to “steal” a starting job away from him (unless we see some significant improve).
The four-star recruit is currently ranked 8th in the state of Texas, 19th among point guards, and 73rd among 2015 high school recruits by 247Sports.
