Yesterday wasn’t the best of days for the Illinois Fighting Illini basketball program. While Head Coach John Groce was busy working the recruiting trail, one of his newcomers for next season was busy with law enforcement officials.
Mary Schenk of the Champaign News-Gazette posted a report at 11:37 am that Darius Paul was arrested on April 22nd following a brief foot chase after he and another male were seen “acting suspiciously” as they walked across a parking lot in Urbana at 3:20 in the morning.
At this point it’s unfair to speculate on what may, or may not, take place with regards to disciplinary actions for Paul as it relates to his status with the Illini basketball team. Coach Groce re-iterated as much with his official statement released through the University when he said:
“We are aware of the situation that occurred with Darius and are in the process of gathering more information,” Groce said. “We need to let the legal process run its course, and then will determine appropriate disciplinary action.”
This is the first incident that has resulted in arrest of an Illinois player since Groce took over as the Head Coach of the Fighting Illini. As a fan, here’s hoping it’s the last.
Writing Illini will have any further updates regarding disciplinary action as they are made available.
