On Wednesday, Illinois Fighting Illini sophomore guard Mike LaTulip was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team.
Illinois saw forty-six of their winter student-athletes from six different sports make this list. Among the forty-six student-athletes, there were 20 swimmers & divers, nine men’s gymnasts, seven women’s gymnasts, seven wrestlers and three men’s and women’s basketball players.
In order for a student-athlete to make the Academic All-Big Ten, they must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, earn an athletic letter and be in at least their second year at their institution.
Illinois had 55 student-athletes make the Academic All-Big Ten team following the fall season and not have a total of 101 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big Ten team for the academic year of 2013-2014.
According to fightingillini.com, “the conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the spring season, and will present the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year.”
