The Illinois Fighting Illini frontcourt was relatively thin this season, but they did the best they could with what they had. Next season promises more depth in the post, and news broke roughly 20 hours ago that one of the incoming Illini frontcourt members has been recognized as the best player in his state.
Per the following release from the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association, White Station’s LeRon Black has been named Tennessee’s Class AAA Mr. Basketball.
The 6’7″ Power Forward earned the honor on the strength of a season that saw him average 20 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals per game. According to the above linked release, Black finished his career at White Station with over 1600 points and over 1100 rebounds. Undoubtedly, Illinois will wholeheartedly welcome production such as this into the fold next season.
Back on January 19th, IA Elites posted Black’s senior year #Illinois Bound mixtape, and for those who haven’t seen what the Tennessee AAA Mr. Basketball brings to the table go ahead and give it a look.
The dunks are always nice to see, but it’s the range and smooth shooting ability that are highlighted that really catch my attention. Couple that ability with his rebounding production and Illinois has a very special player on their hands.
Congratulations to LeRon Black on a well deserved honor. I feel fairly confident that this is just the tip of the iceberg as his game will surely continue to improve over the next 4 years under the tutelage of John Groce and the Illini coaching staff.
