Although head coach Tim Beckman made it seem as though the 2014 recruiting class was all set, the Illinois Fighting Illini played host to 2014 running back/safety Chris James on Friday. James might have played on both sides of the ball at West Orange-Stark High School in Orange, Texas, but he is being recruited by most schools as a safety.
James currently only has two total offers and the Illini are not one of them. The two offers he has are from Iowa State and McNeese State. However, the West Orange-Stark safety is heavily interested in Illinois, Iowa State, TCU, and Texas A&M.
The recruiting experts at 247Sports are listing Chris James as a major Illinois lean even without receiving an offer from Tim Beckman and company. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Texas native instantly commit to the Illini if an offer is received.
Earlier in the week, Writing Illini co-editor Ryan Kraemer previewed the visit of James to Champaign. The most important thing to take away from the visit was that the Texas recruit still does not have an offer from the Fighting Illini.
With only four days to go until National Signing Day, it will be interesting to see if the Illini decide to send a offer his way because signs point to him committing once offered.
The two-star recruit is currently ranked 299th in the state of Texas, 174th among safeties, and 2091st among 2015 high school recruits by 247Sports.
